The Peony Pavilion - video Metropolitan Museum (English Subtitles)
Program Information
Presented November 30, 2012
Tan Dun, director
With the aim of animating Metropolitan Museum galleries in new ways, Met Museum Presents offers one of five performances of the sixteenth-century Kunqu opera masterpiece The Peony Pavilion, in a seventy-minute version developed and directed by celebrated composer Tan Dun with choreography by Huang Doudou, one of China's most prominent dancers, in the Met's Astor Court, the courtyard modeled on a seventeenth-century garden.
The performance is organized in conjunction with the
exhibition Chinese Gardens: Palace Pavilions, Scholars' Studios,
Rustic Retreats, on view August 18, 2012–January 6, 2013, which
explores the rich interactions between pictorial and garden arts in
China across more than one thousand years, featuring more than
seventy paintings and contemporary photographs as well as ceramics,
carved bamboo, lacquerware, metalwork, and textiles drawn from the
Museum's collections.
The Peony Pavilion is one of the most important works of
classical Chinese opera. A sweeping love story with subplots
involving feudalism, the work in its original form consisted of
fifty-five acts that take more than twenty hours to perform. This
version is directed by Zhang Jun, one of China's most respected Kunqu
performers, and remains faithful to the core plot focusing on the
love story between the heroine and hero—Du Liniang and Liu
Mengmei—and the Peony Pavilion where their love began.

Translation of the poem, roughly, in
English:
English:
When winds breathed slowly
and carried cotton blossom drifts
floating from the willow strands,
there in the fragrant willowshade,
we rested in green depths.
Sailing round faraway beaches,
sailing as evening falls;
in this total disorder
of aimless sailing,
where can I make land?
I've met my share of mankind,
but none are like the willows by that
gate of departure. None remain.
If trees had hearts like men do,
they would not be so green with life.
Night comes on, your high city
disappears,
disappears,
There's only the tangle of endless
mountains.
mountains.
Like Wei Lang, I've left you-
But remember; this bracelet of jade;
believe this promise that we've made
When I left, you begged me "Soon
return!"
return!"
For fear we'd leave the red flowers
loveless.
loveless.
And I didn't take your pair of scissors
with me,
with me,
but if I had, I still couldn't cut
these thousand binding, silken threads
of melancholy exile.

The heroine Zhu Yingtai, disguised as a man, becomes bosom friends with Liang Shanbo, a classmate of hers for 3 years. Before returning home, Yingtai implies to shanbo that she will be his wife. Knowing that Yingtai is woman, the delighted Shanbo hurries to her home, only to find that her family has betrothed her to someone else against her will. Under the pressure of the patriarchal clan rules and feudal ethics, they die for love and return into a pair of butterflies. The moving tragic legend extols pure love and freedom of love.
