Evgeny Morozov: Digital Power and Its Discontents | After Democracy

Evgeny Morozov during this speech at Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea
Luigi Pecci talks about the importance of the new data question, its
political ramifications, and how it connects to broader political
economic and political debates of today (about inequality, possible
unemployment due to automation, lack of trust in democratic
institutions). I plan to highlight the ways in which the digitization of
society and economy - as long as it's conducted on terms favorable to
big technology platforms - will disadvantage most of us as well as
outline some of the strategies and tactics to fight back, including
having a more robust political debate about data ownership, the adequacy
of existing property rights for data, and the ways in which organized
political resistance can be mounted, both locally and internationally.
My main message would be that even though delegating more and more power
to big technological intermediaries might temporarily resolve some of
our problems, in the long run we'll pay dearly for that.
